Lou Gehrig: Baseball Legend

Early Life and Career

Lou Gehrig, born June 19, 1903, in New York City, was an American baseball player who played for the New York Yankees for 17 seasons, from 1923 to 1939.

Stats and Accomplishments

Gehrig, known as the "Iron Horse" for his durability and ability to play through injuries, compiled impressive statistics throughout his career:

  • 17 All-Star Game selections
  • 2,721 career hits
  • 493 home runs
  • 1,990 runs batted in (RBIs)
  • Lifetime batting average of .340

Legacy

Gehrig retired from baseball in 1939 due to the onset of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a degenerative neurological disease that would later be known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

He died of the disease in 1941 at the age of 37. Despite his premature passing, Gehrig's impact on baseball remains significant, with his number 4 jersey being retired by the Yankees.
